TV show theme songs started to grow up a little in the 90s. Instead of family friendly, poppy and catchy tunes, 90s TV shows started embracing more musical choices that reflected the changing times. In the 90s, TV execs started tapping into hip hop and alternative rock culture to ensure young people found the songs relevant. The old formula of the 70s and 80s gave way to more instrumental pieces and the use of pre-existing popular songs. On this week’s episode, Dave and Rob look back at their favorite songs and relive how awesome they were in the 90s. As the 90s ended, TV theme songs started getting shorter, and by the mid 2000s, many shows abandoned them in favor of quick title cards. The 90s were one of the last decades where long, fully produced TV themes were the norm. From 90210 to Seinfeld, Saved By the Bell and Law & Order, 90s TV Themes give us a ton of great memories.

Rap music in the 1980s was a groundbreaking and rapidly evolving genre that laid the foundation for modern hip-hop. It started as an underground movement in New York and transformed into a cultural phenomenon by the end of the decade. Early artists like the Sugarhill Gang and Kurtis Blow laid the foundation for artists like Run DMC, the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J to begin to bring rap to a larger audience. By the end of the 80s, rap was becoming big business and was very profitable for record companies. Rap was not without controversy throughout the 80s though, many political and other groups were against the style, sound and lyrical content of rap. Just like heavy metal, it did not conform to certain musical norms that many Americans had come to know. So this week, Dave and Rob will look back at the rise of rap in the 80s and reveal our favorite songs from the decade. From Grandmaster Flash to 2 Live Crew, we’ll listen to the changing styles and subject matter of this once taboo art form. So get ready to get down with two white boys from Oregon, as they lay out the best songs they know from 80s Rap.

The Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes, is a classic teen drama that takes place over the course of a single Saturday detention at Shermer High School. The film follows five students from vastly different social cliques. The five classes include the criminal, the princess, the jock, the nerd and the basket case. Being overseen by an angry Vice Principal, the 5 students start to learn they have more in common than they realize. This week, Rob, Dave and Kurt will dissect the movie and look at all of their favorite parts. They agree, mostly disagree, and probably say several inappropriate things. The film is celebrating its 40 year anniversary and is considered an 80’s teen movie classic. The film is known for its iconic moments, including the students’ heartfelt confessions, dance sequence, and the famous closing shot of Bender raising his fist in the air. The Breakfast Club captures the complexity of teenage identity and remains a defining film of the 1980s.

During this month 35 years ago, the whole world threw on some Hammer pants and was captivated by the world’s most famous Bat Boy. We’re heading back to 1990 to look at the smash hit album by MC Hammer, Please Hammer Don’t Hurt Em. Hammer’s second studio album was a massive commercial success, solidifying him as one of the biggest hip-hop/pop crossover artists of the early 90’s. He also happened to be blaring consistently through the speakers of teenage Dave and Rob, who loved singing out U Can’t Touch This at the top of their lungs. Sponsored by Pepsi and Kentucky Fried Chicken, Hammer embarked on a world tour that included opening acts like En Vogue and Vanilla Ice. So this week, we’ll go track by track and re visit this iconic album of the early 90’s. Did it hold up and sound as good as we remember? Also, can Rob still do the Hammer dance? We’ll answer these questions, and so much more during this week’s show. Please Hammer Don’t Hurt is still one of the most successful and influential rap albums of all time, paving the way for pop/rap’s dominance in the early 90’s. Here Come the Hammer, uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, Here Come The Hammer!

Valentine’s Day in the 80s and 90s had a different, unique charm than today. The holiday was less digital, more personal and packed with pop culture influences. On this week’s episode, Rob and Dave look back at the candy, TV and music of the most romantic holiday in the 80s and 90s. From hand made cards, mixtapes and school dances serenaded by Wham, Valentines Day has a nostalgic feel from that time of when you just sent flowers to a loved one during class or slipped a note in their locker. By the time the 90s came around, you could send loving messages via beeper and turn in those clunky cassettes for the cleaner sound of the mixed CD. However you look back at Valentine's Day, whether with fondness or cringe, we’re going to throw some of those memories, good and bad your way and hopefully it will fill your heart with joy and happiness as we go back to Valentine’s Day this week, in the 80’s and 90s.

We’re heading back 30 years this week to look at the 100 hottest songs in America, according to radio and album sales, for this week in January 1995. 1995 was diverse, reflecting a wide range of genres that dominated the charts and defined the cultural landscape of the mid 1990’s. Styles that were popular were grunge/alternative rock, Britpop to include bands like Oasis, Blur and Pulp, Pop Music, Hip Hop and R&B, Country music and the electronic/dance/house style. This week Rob and Dave look at the famous Billboard Hot 100 and choose our favorites from the best 100 songs at that time in 1995, in the US. Some will rock, some will spark nostalgia and some may have you remember, why in the heck was that popular? Any way you look at it, we’ll provide you with a great flashback to January of 1995 and have you remembering everything great about the mid 90’s. In short, 1995 was a year of musical variety, with rock, pop, hip hop and dance music thriving simultaneously. This eclectic mix reflected the growing segmentation of music audiences and the globalization of musical tastes. Gotta make that money man!

The 1980s were a golden era for pop music, often celebrated for its unique blend of creativity, innovation, and cultural impact. But what made the music of the time so awesome. Well, you had iconic artists and personalities, genre blending creativity, the synthesizer revolution, unforgettable melodies, MTV and a timeless appeal. The standard most artists could point to that illustrated their popularity was the Billboard Hot 100. Charting on the Hot 100 could boost the artist and make them more famous than they could have imagined. However, there were times that songs were on the radio or MTV and somehow didn’t make it onto the Hot 100. This week, we’ll look at some songs that are memorable of the 80’s but somehow didn’t make it onto America’s most popular music chart. Did those songs disappear or remain iconic? We’ll take a look at this as the decade of the 80s wasn’t just about creating music, it was about creating an experience. The 1980s left a legacy of songs that remain iconic, energetic, and as said before, timeless.

In the new world of playlists and streaming music, the youth of today will never know the painstaking steps that were needed to formulate a mixed cassette tape. Whether you were building the tape for a friend, a family member or that special someone, it was a process that took a lot of time, patience and thought to make sure the songs you selected were just right. Through a combination of borrowing tapes or recording off the radio you would put your masterpiece together and then wait anxiously to see what their reaction would be. So this week Rob is traveling back 37 years to the great year of 1988 and putting together a 90 minute mixtape that will show off his musical abilities. He will channel his 11 year old self and put together a list of songs that would surely impress anyone in 1988. So Dave and the audience this week will sit back and enjoy the music of 1988 and try to figure out if this would have been a successful mix that someone else would have really liked listening to. From Richard Marx and Bobby Brown to Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli, we’ll feel like we're back in the great year of 1988.
