1986 Music Draft

The year 1986 was a vibrant time in music, with significant releases across various genres that have had a lasting impact. Huge albums by Bon Jovi, Madonna, Peter Gabriel and Janet Jackson took over the Billboard Charts. On this episode, Rob and Dave will be joined by some guests to draft teams of the best songs of the entire year. We’ll go through several rounds, discussing and having some fun looking at multiple genres of songs in different categories. So with a plethora of albums and singles that helped define the musical landscape of the mid-80’s, and many of them being considered classics to this day, we’ll have a great time drafting our favorites from 1986.

Dr. Feelgood - Motley Crue (1989)

35 years ago this month Motley Crue released their fifth studio album. After years of rocking in a drug and alcohol induced haze, this album Dr. Feelgood was the bands first recording since their dedication to sobriety and rehabilitation. Clear heads definitely prevailed on this album as the song spawned several top 40 singles, became the bands most successful album and really encapsulated the rock sound of the late 80s hair/glam metal explosion. On this episode, Dave and Rob will go back to their Junior High days to relive the fun party vibe that the Crue emitted, and discuss if the album still holds up today. Dr. Feelgood is often regarded as the quintessential album of the glam metal era, and remains a fan favorite to this day. So let’s join Vince, Nikki, Mick and Tommy as the prescribe us the musical medicine we need from Dr. Feelgood.

Weird Science (1985)

This week we’re heading back almost 40 years to hang out with a couple of horny, nerdy guys back in 1985. This modern day retelling of Frankenstein stars Anthony Michael Hall and Gary Ilan Mitchell-Smith as they decide to create their own girlfriend since their social status makes them social pariahs. Weird Science is a realistic look at what two motivated guys could accomplish with a computer back in the mid 80s, and all of the hijinks that would occur afterward. Rob, Dave and the Movie Hound will strap some bras on their heads and look to avoid Chet as they take a look back at the comedy sci-fi classic. We’ll confront bullies, have some great adventures, throw an ultimate party and learn some life lessons from our mentor Lisa, as we power up the VCR to get down with some Weird Science.

1990s Billboard Alternative Airplay

The 90s saw the rise of numerous subgenres within alternative music, including grunge, Britpop, Indie rock and more. The popularity in the early 90s of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and others opened the door for alternative music to become a more mainstream genre in the industry. This allowed artists and bands that were reserved to indie labels to be discovered by major record companies and release albums and songs that are still highly regarded today. On this week’s episode, Rob and Dave are joined by some special guests to look at the Billboard Alternative Airplay charts, and talk about some of the great music that was popular during the 90s. With bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, R.E.M. and more, we’ll put together an alternative playlist that any 90s kid would be proud to jam out to at their favorite coffee house.

Spaceballs (1987)

Hopefully our podcast isn’t jammed this week, but you can never be too ready for Lonestar’s famous raspberry. Alternative music swept the nation in the early 90s. By 1993, “grunge” music was dominating not only the alternative charts, but the hot 100 and MTV as well. Nirvana was huge, and Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and others going mainstream has allowed other lesser known bands to be found and at least have 1 or 2 songs become popular. The Goonies (1985)

This week we’re traveling to the Goon Docks to join up with Mikey, Brand, Chunk, Mouth and the others to look for an elusive, possibly life saving treasure. Much like our gang of outcast children, Dave, Rob and Kurt will go on their own adventure this week looking at the 1985, all time classic, The Goonies. The gang will try to remember all of the great memories and nostalgia this movie stirs up in Gen X and early millennial kids, and possibly enjoy a Baby Ruth or two along the way. So let’s cross some rickety bridges, avoid deadly traps and get the hell away from the Fratelli’s on a quest to steal some old pirate’s booty, and let’s be honest, One Eyed Willy’s not going to know if you take some of that gold.
